PRP Therapy – Ready, Set, Go

My appointment to start try Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is set and ready to go. It is only on my ankle right now as the doctor did not want to tell me yes or not if it was possible with the condition of my spine. So she ordered a MRI and we will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, I have started the “prep” prior to the day of the therapy.

The instructions read as follows:

• Please stop all aspirin, aspirin products, and all nonsteroidals – except Celebrex-5days before the procedure.Ex. of nonsteroidials that need to be stopped are Motrin, Mobic, Advil, Naprosyn, Aleve, Indocin, Lodine, Orudis, Relafen, Daypro, Tolectin, Clinoril, Ibuprofen, Arthotec, Dolobid, Voltaren, Trillisate, Torodol.
• Fish or Vitamin E supplements stop 5 days before procedure.
• If you take Coumadin, Heparin, Lovenox, Warfarin, Pradaxa, Debigatran, Orgaran, Innohep, Fragmin, Argatroban, Plavix, Effient, Prasugrel, RepPro, Ticlid, Trental, Persantine, or any other blood thinner, notify your doctor. This medication must be discontinued prior to an injection and requires permission from the provider prescribing it.
• Do not eat 4 hours or drink 2 hours prior to the procedure. You may take routine a.m. medications with a small amount of water.                             (My oral diabetic meds I need to hold until I eat after procedure)
• You may be requested to obtain lab work and an EKG prior to the procedure. This will be discussed and ordered, if necessary.
• For the patients safety, you must have a responsible adult to drive you home. Failure to have a driver may result in the cancellation of the procedure. Taxis are not permitted.

Here is what to expect post procedure injections:

• It is expected to have increased pain for the first 2 days after the injection. Some degree of discomfort may last up to 2 weeks.
• DO NOT soak the affected area(s) in the bathtub, pool, spa, etc, for 48 hours after the procedure. Shower is acceptable.
• DO NOT ice the injected area for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. The treatment causes an inflammatory response as part of the healing process Using ice will inhibit the process.
• Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications 2 weeks after your injection. This includes Aspirin (for me I was told 7 days), Aleve, Advil, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn. If you are having discomfort after the procedure it is recommended that you take Tylenol, or a medication can be prescribed if needed.
• For the first 48 hours after the procedure, rest the areas as much as possible and limit your activity as tolerated.
• DO NOT do any strenuous or weight bearing activities for 2 weeks after the procedure. You may continue normal/everyday activities, such as driving or walking, until seen again in office.
